Clarification on End-of-Day vs. Intraday Price Discrepancies in StockCharts.com

June 10, 2025

Well past the close today I noticed a substantial difference in the last price quoted by StockCharts.com in Grab Holdings, one of the Cara 100 companies. StockCharts shows the End-of-Day price at $4.98 and the last Intraday price at $4.68. So, I asked AI for clarification. This was the reply.

Dear Bill,

You’ve observed an important nuance in market data reporting. The discrepancy between the End-of-Day (EOD) price and the last intraday price on StockCharts.com (or other platforms) after market close typically stems from the following factors:

  1. Official Closing Price vs. Last Trade
    • The last intraday price reflects the final trade executed before the closing bell (4:00 PM ET).
    • The EOD price may instead use the official closing auction price (for NYSE/NASDAQ-listed stocks), which can differ slightly due to the auction’s order-matching process. This is especially common for high-volume stocks.
  2. Data Source Timing
    • StockCharts.com aggregates data from multiple providers (e.g., Nasdaq Global Index Data, BATS). Delays or discrepancies in how these sources process and transmit the official closing price can result in temporary mismatches.
  3. Adjusted Data (Corporate Actions)
    • If a stock undergoes a corporate action (e.g., dividend, split) after the last trade but before the end of the day (EOD) processing, platforms may adjust the historical price retroactively, causing a visible discrepancy.
  4. After-Hours Trading
    • While StockCharts.com primarily focuses on regular-session data, some platforms might inadvertently blend after-hours trades into the “last price” until EOD data is finalized.

Why It Matters
For consistency in analysis, most technical traders rely on the official closing price (used in EOD charts) rather than the last tick. If you’re noticing persistent discrepancies, I recommend cross-referencing with the stock’s exchange website (e.g., NASDAQ Trader) for official auction data.
