The Engineering of Outcomes

I like the concern shown in the ‘Small News; Big Moves’ article today.

But I think the writer might have spent more time explaining the ‘pump’ phenomenon than what was her focus on current oil price trader sentiment. I say this because price pump and dump seems to be the in-thing across the broad market spectrum and a lot of it is coming from headlines.

Yesterday there was a headline that read ‘Tesla Stock Is at Risk of a Major Breakdown’ whereas the article itself spoke to Tesla CEO Musk’s tweet last weekend that opined his share price was “higher than we have the right to deserve”.  Rather than an investment analysis, the article added some squiggly line interpretation of the Tesla stock price pattern, which in itself was hardly earth shattering.

I don’t particularly care for Tesla as an investment but I can relate to Musk’s pain.

Years ago, after my personal decision to depart a large Canadian broker-dealer, I was surprised to get a request for an interview. I knew the writer was a young stringer for Big Media who was quite fair in his reports, so I agreed. After the story went national, but before I had read it, I received a phone call from a very upset Chairman/CEO of the firm, a man who had been my partner and someone I highly respected. I was shocked at what I read, so I contacted the writer who then sent me a copy of the article he submitted, which I forwarded to the company. We were amazed and insulted that the published piece had removed every positive quote (almost all of them were) and had emphasized the rest, making it appear I was dissing the company. Worse, the headline screamed ill will, which was clearly neither my intent nor the content or tone of the written material. The journalist apologized and looked into the matter on my behalf. I soon learned that the big city newspaper editor had a personal feud going on with the Chairman/CEO and I had been set up.

Just another sleazy slice of life and one reason why I have fought for social equity, that we endeavor to be fair to one another.
